NEWS PACKAGING 82

In the perfume and cosmetics sector, packaging is much more than a simple container. It is the product’s first presentation letter, conveys the brand’s values, reinforces the consumer experience, and, increasingly, reflects a commitment to sustainability. Today, discussing packaging in this sector necessarily involves addressing the environmental impact and the need to innovate in both materials and production processes. Ecodesign has established itself as a priority in the development of perfume and cosmetics packaging. Incorporating sustainable criteria from the product’s conception allows for a reduction in the ecological footprint throughout its entire life cycle, from the selection of raw materials to their recycling or reuse. This is due to regulatory requirements, but also to the demand of consumers who are increasingly aware of brands’ social and environmental responsibility. Beyond sustainability, the global trends shaping the direction of packaging include digitalization, improved user experience, the pursuit of well-being, and, of course, innovation in design and materials. In the specific case of perfumery and cosmetics, packaging must seduce and surprise, creating an emotional connection with the consumer, while adapting to the principles of circularity and waste reduction. In this context, the circular economy acts as a driver of change. The industry is working on developing new materials: lighter, recyclable, or biodegradable, capable of maintaining the quality and aesthetics demanded by the sector. However, the main challenge remains achieving sustainable solutions that are also cost-competitive, a key aspect in a highly competitive market. At the Packaging Innovation Cluster, we contribute to this process by promoting collaborative projects, fostering knowledge exchange, and connecting emerging talent with the real needs of companies. An example of this is our National Packaging Design and Sustainability Awards, which since 2009 have recognized innovative proposals submitted by students in response to specific challenges in the sector. These awards, now in their 16th year, have been attended by thousands of students from all over Spain, bridging the gap between academia and industry. 31 TEMA CENTRAL I MAIN TOPIC Trends and innovations in perfume packaging Jesús Pérez, Director of the Packaging Innovation Cluster
