57 CLÚSTER DEL PACKAGING promoting industrial sustainability and circularity through collaborative projects. The project consortium is led by the Packaging Cluster and is made up of leading entities such as FLiPO, a pioneering brand of modular eyewear, which defined the functional requirements of the case; BAU, the University Center for Arts and Design, was responsible for the analysis and characterization of SCOBY waste as a raw material; Batllegroup, responsible for the eco-design of the case; Talleres Soteras, which carried out the prototyping and industrialization tests; and Blue Room Innovation, which developed a digital passport to guarantee the traceability of the materials and their life cycle. Bioma kombucha and Vitae kombucha also collaborated as waste suppliers, providing the basic organic material for the development. OrganicUP was born in response to the growing surplus of waste from the kombucha sector, which has increased its production sevenfold in Catalonia. With this challenge as a starting point, the project worked to revalue the SCOBY as a useful resource and create a recyclable, functional, and aesthetically attractive eyeglass case that reduces the environmental impact and promotes the use of renewable raw materials. Furthermore, the development of the digital product passport guarantees the origin of the components and facilitates their circular management. During the project, several key activities were carried out: waste collection and characterization, formulation and iterations of the new material, packaging eco-design, industrial development, prototyping, functional validation, and creation of the Digital Product Passport, as well as communication and dissemination actions to promote the solution’s replicability in other sectors. With a clear focus on transferability, OrganicUP offers a real and scalable solution for incorporating organic waste into value-added products within the packaging sector, and represents a model of collaborative innovation to boost the circular economy in Catalonia.
