To discuss packaging sustainability, we are joined by three distinguished collaborators who explain the technological transformation of packaging in light of the European Packaging Regulation and its contribution to the circular economy. Furthermore, the Advanced Packaging Association (APA) emphasizes the need to evaluate sustainable packaging not only based on the material used but also on its effectiveness and performance under industrial conditions. But before addressing these topics, a note on the perception of Spanish consumers: sustainability remains a priority for them, though it is increasingly linked to cost savings and consumption efficiency. This is reflected in the AECOC Shopperview Sustainability Barometer 2026, which, in this edition, specifically analyzes the role of packaging in purchasing decisions. The study shows that 74% of consumers consider sustainability-related issues important. However, only 37% state that they find it easy to maintain a sustainable lifestyle. Seven out of ten consumers acknowledge that the type of packaging influences their choices, and 40% claim to have stopped buying a product because they deemed its packaging unsustainable. Meanwhile, 87% state that they buy products with less packaging. Consumers demand better information The study also highlights consumer demands, such as the use of easily recyclable mono-material packaging—a priority for 77% of respondents—as well as the need for clear information on how to recycle products (80%) and a reduction in packaging whenever possible (78%). At the same time, 75% would be willing to switch formats if it significantly reduced waste, and 80% believe that unnecessary packaging exists; however, 58% want to purchase products that arrive in perfect condition thanks to adequate packaging. The barometer concludes that sustainability remains a competitive factor for brands, even though price increasingly influences purchasing decisions. 42% of consumers state they have stopped buying products from brands they consider unsustainable, and 26% say they prefer sustainable brands, provided the price remains comparable.
